The key difference between kiln-dried sand and ordinary building sand is the moisture content. Building sand often contains water or dampness that can expand, encourage weed growth, and fail to compact properly. Kiln-dried sand, by contrast, has negligible moisture, which means it compacts firmly into joints without risk of expansion and creates a more durable, longer-lasting bond between pavers.
In block paving applications, kiln-dried sand serves two practical purposes: it mechanically locks the units in place to prevent individual pavers shifting or tilting, and it acts as a barrier to soil contact, reducing weed establishment and surface instability. The sand fills all voids in the joint profile, distributing weight evenly across the paved area.
