What is porcelain paving?

Porcelain paving consists of ceramic slabs manufactured by firing clay and other raw materials at high temperatures. The result is a material with very low porosity, typically below 0.5 percent water absorption, making it highly resistant to staining, frost damage, and weathering.

The key advantage over natural stone lies in consistency and durability. Porcelain has uniform colour, thickness, and density across every slab, whereas natural stone like sandstone or limestone varies. This uniformity simplifies layout and reduces breakage during installation. The dense surface also sheds water and resists oil, rust, and algae growth far more effectively than porous alternatives.

Installation differs from natural stone in several ways. Porcelain slabs are often larger and heavier, sometimes 60cm or more across, requiring robust mortar beds and proper joint spacing to accommodate thermal movement. The surface is less prone to sand-joint degradation because moisture does not penetrate as readily. However, the hardness of porcelain demands skilled cutting and a good quality wet saw to avoid chipping. Colour and slip resistance vary by finish: polished surfaces can be slippery when wet, while textured or anti-slip finishes provide better grip outdoors.
