What is spalling?

Spalling is the progressive flaking, chipping, or crumbling of a paved surface caused by freeze-thaw cycles, salt exposure, or moisture penetration into natural stone or concrete.

Spalling refers to the flaking or chipping away of a paving surface, usually starting small but spreading across the affected area over time. It occurs when water enters the material (concrete, natural stone, or other porous surfaces), freezes during cold weather, and expands, forcing fragments to break free. In Cheltenham's climate, this damage is particularly common during winter months when frost alternates with thaw cycles.

Salt used on pavements to prevent ice buildup can accelerate spalling significantly. The salt draws moisture deeper into the material and weakens the surface integrity, causing pieces to detach. Natural stone flags are especially vulnerable, though concrete and slate are also prone to this damage. Untreated or poorly sealed surfaces deteriorate faster than protected ones.

Early signs include small pits or rough patches on the surface. Left unaddressed, spalling can compromise the structural integrity of the paved area and create trip hazards. The damage spreads as each freeze-thaw cycle loosens more material. Property owners often notice spalling on driveways, garden paths, patios, and public pavements after harsh winters.

Regular inspection and preventive sealing can slow or prevent onset, while active spalling typically requires professional paving repair to remove loose material and restore the surface.
