What is a whacker plate (plate compactor)?

A whacker plate, or plate compactor, is a motorised piece of equipment that uses rapid vertical vibration to compress loose materials into a dense, stable base. The machine consists of a steel plate (usually 600mm to 800mm wide) mounted on an engine frame, with the plate oscillating up to 60 times per second as the operator guides it across the work surface.

In block paving work, whacker plates serve two main functions. First, they compact the sub-base layers (sand, gravel, and hardcore) before laying begins, ensuring the foundation won't settle unevenly after installation. Second, they are run across the completed paving surface after blocks are laid and jointed with sand, helping the blocks bed firmly into the sand layer and creating a level, safe finish.

The vibration causes particles to reorganise and pack tighter, reducing air voids and increasing load-bearing capacity. This prevents subsequent subsidence, cracking, and surface movement that would occur on uncompacted ground.
