Driveway repair vs full replacement: what Cheltenham contractors recommend

Once a driveway shows more than one or two problem areas, cracking, uneven settlement, weeds through multiple joints, faded or spalling surface, the question shifts from "can this be patched" to "is patching worth it at all". This page is for that decision, before committing to either a repair contractor or a full driveway paving quote.

A repair makes sense when the problems are localised and the rest of the surface and base are sound. A full replacement makes sense when the sub-base has failed in multiple places, the drainage falls are wrong across the whole driveway, or the existing material (old tarmac, first-generation block paving) is past matching or worth keeping.

  • Signs a repair is enough: one or two sunken areas, isolated cracking, a damaged edge or single utility cut
  • Signs a full relay is the better spend: repeated failures in the same spots, ponding water across large areas, base visibly failing in several places, planning to change layout or add parking
  • Ask any contractor to explain which category your driveway falls into and why, not just give a number

What it costs

Repairs are priced by area and complexity of the fix, so cost scales with how much lifting and rebuilding is needed. A full replacement is priced by total driveway area, material choice, and any groundwork like extending the base or improving drainage, so it is a larger job but resets the surface completely rather than patching around recurring problems.

FAQ

How do I know if my driveway is beyond repair?
If failures keep recurring in different spots, or the sub-base is visibly compromised across the drive (not just one area), a full replacement usually works out better value than repeated patching.
Will a repaired section always look slightly different?
With matching material and careful relaying it can be close, but reclaimed or weathered block paving is harder to match exactly than a full relay using consistent new material.
Does patching now stop me from doing a full driveway later?
No. A sound patch repair buys time and does not rule out a full replacement later, though a contractor doing the eventual full job may remove the patched area anyway.
